Various categories of tranquilizers

Anxiolytics, sedatives and hypnotics (drugs that help you fall asleep) should not be confused with neuroleptics, also known as antipsychotics, which are used to treat symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations and agitation, or with antidepressants, which are used to treat depression.

Most of the drugs used to combat anxiety belong to the benzodiazepine family. Some benzodiazepine trade names may be familiar to you: Temesta®, Valium®, Xanax®, Lysanxia®,... You'll be able to recognize these molecules because their chemical name generally ends with "-zolam" or "-zepam" (see the drug leaflet)...

Other molecules are also used to help people fall asleep (hypnotics) and/or combat anxiety: hydroxyzine, zolpidem, zopiclone and certain antihistamines. All have varying degrees of side-effects, but above all they induce a rapid and strong dependency. All these drugs are available on prescription only.

Finally, there are effective and less dangerous herbal anxiolytics.

Always talk to a doctor!
