Most studies show that REM sleep phases (dream phases) have a facilitating effect on learning. During the night following learning, information encoded and processed during the day is consolidated. As the night progresses, the periods of REM sleep become longer. For a student, this is an important stage in the integration of the material studied.

It is not by using this sleep time for new material (possibly offered in the form of a recording on a tape recorder) that we will "help" our dreams to fulfill their role of consolidating the learning achieved.

What's more, sleep is recovery. A  sleepless night will inevitably have an impact on our intellectual capacities: we risk thinking less flexibly, having fluctuating tension, with moments of apathy and others of overexcitement. All these effects are detrimental to concentration and memorization.
